Pacific Youth Reconnection Project: 'Bring da family to Uni'
Our Pacific Youth Reconnection team has been busy in the community, spreading the word about the Pacific Collections at the Museum and our Pacific youth engagement initiatives.
Recently, over 200 students, teachers and community members from Rooty Hill High School and Doonside High School attended the University of Western Sydney's Pacifica Achievement to Higher Education (PATHE) ‘Bring da family to Uni’ night.
PATHE is all about engaging and encouraging students from Pacific backgrounds in their pursuit towards completing higher education and/or further vocational training.
What happened at the PATHE event?
In partnership with PATHE, our Pacific Youth Reconnection Project team exhibited Pacific artefacts and spoke to attendees about Pacific culture and our activities. It was also an opportunity to network with service providers, community workers and elders. The event included traditional Pacific food and performances.
Technical Officer Logan Metcalfe, Youth Reference Group member Zehrish Naera and I were on site to ensure all went well. We look forward to attending the next event at the University of Western Sydney, Milperra campus.
What was the feedback from the PATHE organisers?
We were really happy to see this mention on the PATHE Facebook page:
“What a fantastic night, PATHE would like to give praise and thanks to … the Australian Museum for your immaculate display of various Pacific collections and engagement with our Pacific communities – absolutely beautiful.”
