Great White crosses the Tasman

Since 2005, New Zealand ichthyologists have been tagging and tracking White Sharks. The work of two of my colleagues, Malcolm Francis and Clinton Duffy, has shed new light on the fantastic journeys of White Sharks. To date, 85 White Sharks have been tagged in New Zealand waters, many in the Chatham and Stewart islands.

One individual, known as Nicholas Cage, swam to New Caledonia and back. A second fish called Pip, swam from New Zealand to Sydney and then headed north up the coast to Queensland. Whereas Caro intially headed off to the Challenger Plateau but then back-tracked to Stewart Island. When last heard of Caro had left Stewart Island and was off the coast of Fiordland, slowly heading north. Apparently these impressive fish regularly make prodigious journeys.
