Working together — Sydney’s cultural institutions

If you have been to Darling Harbour recently, you may have noticed billboards and hoardings highlighting the cultural history of Sydney.

Five of the city’s cultural institutions were asked to develop a timeline of their buildings, collections, exhibitions and performances over the last 200 years.

The result is a stunning visual journey which explores the cultural evolution of the city and transforms the 400 metres of hoardings erected around the site of the new International Convention Centre Sydney.

The project includes contributions from the Australian Museum, Art Gallery of NSW, Museum of Applied Arts & Sciences (Powerhouse Museum), State Library and Sydney Opera House.

The Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority initiated the project in appreciation of the significance of the State’s arts and cultural institutions in helping to shape the city’s identity.

For everyone involved, it’s been an exciting collaborative opportunity to promote greater awareness of the many events, performances, festivals and exhibitions that enrich life for the people of Sydney.

In addition to the timeline, advertising billboards have been installed on the hoardings so look out for Garrigarrang: Sea Country, with other Museum exhibitions and programs to appear over the next year.
